This is it. The culmination of the Seventh Doctor stories ever since Ace joined him in 1987’s Dragonfire comes to a head in Big Finish’s Gods and Monsters.
Next month’s release sees the return of Fenric and the Haemovores, last seen in The Curse of Fenric (1989), the former to be played by The Man Who Knew Too Little’s John Standing (who also appeared in 2007’s The Shadow in the North with the Eeventh Doctor, Matt Smith, and Billie Piper, best-known as Rose Tyler). Producer, David Richardson, says:
“Gods and Monsters is the whole era of the Seventh Doctor encapsulated in one story.”
The audio is written by Mike Maddox and former-Doctor Who Magazine editor, Alan Barnes, and directed by Ken Bentley. Here’s what you can look forward to:
“The TARDIS travellers arrive in a bizarre landscape seemingly immune to the physical laws governing the rest of the universe. Ace, Hex and their motley army of allies battle to rescue the Doctor from the trap he’s walked into… soon realising that the odds are stacked against them.
But the gods and monsters who inhabit this strange realm loaded the dice against them long ago, in the dim and distant past – and defeat’s their only option.”
Ace’s story began when she was whisked away to the planet, Svartos by a time storm. It was revealed in The Curse of Fenric that it was the titular villain who kidnapped her, in order to manipulate the Doctor. After meeting Hex (Philip Olivier) in the audio adventure, The Harvest, their adventures in time and space continued… but were they being manipulated once again…? Richardson explains:
“Script editor Alan Barnes has performed a masterstroke – like a grand chess master, he’s been moving his pieces around the board for some time… The TARDIS turned white in The Angel of Scutari… A black TARDIS appeared in Robophobia… Aristedes (Maggie O’Neill) stepped into the audio range in Project: Destiny… Sally Morgan (Amy Pemberton) was introduced in House of Blue Fire…
“And over the last couple of months, in Protect and Survive and Black and White, the pieces have come together. We have a lost Doctor, two TARDISes, four companions and the epic battle to end all epic battles among the elder gods in a higher dimension. With Haemovores!”
